چکیده

The seismic signatures of isolated body phases from many: deep-fo~cus earthquakes were analyzed in the time domain. Most shocks were found to be multiple events when examined in detail. The time history derived from P waves for single events predict synthetic S-wave shapes that match the observations, indicating compatibility with shear dislocation theory. Several other features of source functions in the time domain have been brought to light.

The complex rupture process of the 1996 deep Flores , Indonesia earthquake ( Mw 7 . 9 ) from teleseismic P - waves

From an analysis of broadband teleseismic Pwaveforms we resolve the complex rupture characteristics of the 17 June 1996, Flores earthquake (Mw 7.9, depth 590 km). This earthquake was unusual because of its large rupture length and the variation in rupture velocity and stress drop. The 20 s rupture propagated westward at 2-3 km/s to a distance of 20-30 km, and eastward at 4 km/s over 75 km. Aver...

Appraisal of the evolutionary-based methodologies in generation of artificial earthquake time histories

Through the last three decades different seismological and engineering approaches for the generation of artificial earthquakes have been proposed. Selection of an appropriate method for the generation of applicable artificial earthquake accelerograms (AEAs) has been a challenging subject in the time history analysis of the structures in the case of the absence of sufficient recorded accelerogra...

Waveform Effects of a High-velocity, Subducted Slab

Creager and Jordan [1986] propose that penetration of subducting slabs under the Kurile Islands and other subduction zones to depths of at least 1000 km is necessary to explain travel time anomalies of deep earthquakes. Such penetration would also be expected to affect the amplitudes and waveforms of the body waves from earthquakes. Synthetic seismograms appropriate for a record section in a pl...

Deep-Focus Repeating Earthquakes in the Tonga–Fiji Subduction Zone

Abstract Deep-focus earthquakes in the Tonga–Fiji subduction zone make up greater than 66% of the globally recorded deep seismicity. The high number of deep-focus seismicity in this active subduction zone allows us to search for deep-focus similar earthquake pairs and repeating earthquakes. We compile a waveform dataset for deep earthquakes with magnitude above 4.7 occurring in the Tonga–Fiji–K...

Repeating deep earthquakes: evidence for fault reactivation at great depth.

We have identified three groups of deep earthquakes showing nearly identical waveforms in the Tonga slab. Relocation with a cross-correlation method shows that each cluster is composed of 10 to 30 earthquakes along a plane 10 to 30 kilometers in length. Some of the earthquakes are colocated, demonstrating repeated rupture of the same fault, and one pair of events shows identical rupture complex...
